We proudly closed this inspiring week with a session on the results from our turtle survey:

🔹 15 sightings
🔹 10 registered green turtles
🔹 1 hawksbill
🔹 A rare green-hawksbill interaction
🔹 1 new movement documented (Marsa Abu Dabbab ➡️ Shona)
🔹 2 past movements confirmed!

📸 Today was also a Photo ID workshop with real field images—staff & guests did an amazing job learning how we ID turtles by their faces!

🌊🐢 Grateful for a meaningful collaboration with the University of Sussex !

After a rich and productive stay in Marsa Shagra Village and Marsa Nakari Village , we had the chance to wrap things up with a quick but memorable visit to the TurtleWatch Egypt office—just before our colleagues from the University of Sussex headed back to the UK.

It was a pleasure to once again work alongside Dr. Valentina Scarponi, Dr. Ellen Rotheray, and MRes student Aimee–Jane Lowles as part of their annual Egypt Field Course, with a focus on coral reefs and marine turtle monitoring. The time spent together in the field was not only scientifically valuable but also full of energy, motivation, and shared purpose.

We loved having you with us, and it was such a joy to take a group photo with everyone proudly wearing their new TurtleWatch Egypt t-shirts—thank you for supporting our project and becoming part of our community.

Huge thanks also to our partners at Red Sea Diving Safari for their continuous support in making this collaboration possible. We’re already looking forward to building more shared experiences and research in the Red Sea.

🇬🇧 Sea Turtles in the Classroom! 🐢✨
Our team designed a hands-on marine biology workshop for third-grade students at @scuolatavelli in Ravenna — a journey into the fascinating world of sea turtles! 🌊
During the workshop, the kids had fun exploring turtle biology, why these incredible animals are endangered, how TurtleWatch Egypt 2.0 works, what photo-identification is, and most importantly — what they can do to protect sea turtles and marine life.
A very special thank you to Valentina Sesia, who voluntarily shared her talent as an illustrator to create beautiful, engaging new games with us. Her unique style brought a whole new layer of creativity to the experience. We’re thrilled to welcome her into the TurtleWatch team! 💙
And a heartfelt thanks to teacher Elisa Carloni, who, as soon as she heard about our project, strongly wanted us there. After this wonderful adventure with classes 3A and 3B, we’re getting ready for the next one — this Tuesday, with the second-grade students! 🐢💼

🌱🐾 A surprise encounter with Kuno the dugong! 🐾🌱
A huge thank you to Andrea Cattaneo, who shared a truly special sighting with us: a close (but respectful!) encounter with Kuno, a dugong we know well!

Our Turtle Watch team first met Kuno in 2023 at Shams Alam, during a turtle monitoring mission with WWF Travel. This time, he was seen peacefully grazing on seagrass in Gorgonia Bay — and yes, we said grazing! 🥬😄 Dugongs feed in the most adorable way, slowly gliding over the seabed and munching away with little puffs of sand... and if you listen closely in the video, you can even hear him eating! 🎧

🐾 At Turtle Watch Egypt, we also actively contribute to dugong monitoring and data collection in collaboration with The Egyptian Dugong Project. Together, we’re working to better understand and protect these gentle sea mammals.

These encounters remind us of how important it is to respect marine wildlife, keep a safe distance, and never disturb animals like dugongs, who are vulnerable and need peace to thrive.

🐢 While we usually focus on turtles, protecting habitats like Gorgonia Bay benefits all species — big, small, flippered, or finned.
